advocacy course
The SCI Research Advocacy Course, will help increase knowledge of the research process so that individuals with SCI and caregivers feel prepared to serve as research advocates and so that SCI researchers and healthcare providers are better able to effectively partner with members of the SCI lived experience community.
If you wish to take the course, please register to access your personal course profile. From there you may select if you would like to take the full course, or review the SCI-RAC Lite Bundles.
The full course includes:
- 12 Modules, taking approximately 6 hours to complete
- Module Quizzes
- Upon completion, you will receive a certificate
These bundles are available for those in the community who may be interested in just a few of videos and do not have the time to commit to the full course. Each bundle takes approximately 1 hour to complete.
Benefits of Taking the Course
Individuals with Lived Experience of SCI / SCI Principal Member Organizations
- Increase your knowledge of the research process and current SCI research to better advocate when in research settings.
- Increase your knowledge of the biology of an SCI and the various secondary complications that arise so that you can advocate for the community as a whole.
- Upon completion of the course, sign-up for NASCIC’s Project Engagement Database so that you can be placed in research projects as an advisor or study participant.
- Continue to stay connected with NASCIC to learn about new research partnerships and research opportunities.
- Take your new knowledge from the course to advocate to your peers about the importance of the voice of lived experience in SCI research.
SCI Researchers/Clinicians/Industry Professionals
- Increase your knowledge of what it means to live with a spinal cord injury and the many roadblocks that hinder individuals from being involved in research.
- Learn how to design a research study that meaningfully engages the SCI community.
- Learn about other SCI research areas that you might not be familiar with.
- Upon completion of the course, connect with NASCIC to help develop an engagement plan or recruit SCI advisors or study participants.
- Take your new knowledge from the course to advocate to your colleagues about the importance of community engagement in SCI research and how to get started.
- Become a valued resource for when asked about research by the SCI community.
